The unfairly hated end to the Ultima series

Nobody is saying Ultima 9: Ascension is a fantastic game, but nostalgia junkies are so in love that the previous eight versions that they are punishing the developers for trying something new to bring the game into this last 30 years. The previous games had terrible graphics because they were very old games. Ultima 9: Ascension updated the graphics a little and changed the game play to suit, and most Ultima fans hated the game because of it.

Is Ultima 9 so bad?

Just like with the previous Ultima games, you are the hero in a role-playing game. You have to go on quests collecting weapons, items, armor and spells to defeat your enemies and emerge victorious. The game has more 3D game play than any of the previous versions, but it is still primitive by today’s standards. EA bought the rights to the game and decided to make it more suitable for casual gamers, which means many of the fact that were built into the previous games were ignored or warped. The story became a little lazier because it didn’t feature much from the previous games, and the final villain is probably the worst cardboard cutout of a villain ever.

Non-fans will probably enjoy it more

If you are a fan of the previous Ultima games, then you will probably hate everything about this game. If you have no idea what Ultima is and you fancy playing a retro role-playing game, then Ultima 9: Ascension is for you. It will not knock your socks off, but it offers a nice dose of role-playing nostalgia from the 90s.

PROS

  • The graphics are far better than the previous versions
  • Its game play mechanic has been updated from the previous versions

CONS

  • The storyline is weak compared to its predecessors
  • It doesn’t engage with the fans who have supported this franchise
